European Wax Painting

A Modern Twist of an Ancient Art Form

The magic of melting wax brings you into another world. The mind shuts off and you relax into the warmth of the media as it transports you from abstract to realistic images. With the European Encaustic method, you use only hot irons to paint with, but the process can take you in many different directions. There will be opportunity to explore many of these methods. It allows an absolute beginner to create a finished piece in the very first class. At the same time, it allows an experienced artist to expand into another media and get loose as they find ways to mix this with their own favorite style.

You will love wax if you are interested in photography or card-making, and rubber stamp work with wax is outstanding. Collage is also a natural as the wax accepts all forms of material to be absorbed into its surface. When you attach tissue, it lets the surface take up other mediums. You can rub oil paints into the surface for highlights and develop creative surfaces with tissue and hot glue for texture and paint on mirrors, metal, watercolor paper, and gloss stock for shiny surfaces.
